DJ SOUTHERN BELLE

BLOCKDYMEZ: First I’d like to welcome you to BLOCKDYMEZ.COM, how did you hear about the site?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Thank you for the warm welcome. I've heard about you via Myspace and it took off from there! I LOVE social networks! *laughs*

BLOCKDYMEZ: How long have you been a DJ and what made u want to be a DJ?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Roughly about 5yrs. Music is in my blood honestly. My uncle has produced for artists such as Cherish, Yung Joc, Bow/Omarion (via FaceOff album), and now Sho Baraka! It's just something that was instilled in me since I was a kid.

BLOCKDYMEZ: What DJ's have influenced you?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Mann...I would have to say Jazzy Joyce, Cut Creator, Jam Master Jay (R.I.P.), my brother LaRose, and of course Grandmaster Flash!

BLOCKDYMEZ: How would you describe your style as a DJ?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: I would say it's a combination of the NY style mixed with the southern style.

BLOCKDYMEZ: I see you are from Texas. What flavor does being from TX bring 2 your mixes

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Well in the South itself, we're known for our various type of beats. Whether its juke, bounce, snap, crunk, etc. In TX (expecially in Houston) we're known for Screwed & Chopped music. Its a culture of its own. Dallas has their own thing, Houston has their own thing, Austin has their own thing, etc. No matter where in TX you're from, our flavor is that feel good type of beats. So by me bringing that to my mixes, I'm about to bring the best of both worlds by mixing and blending.

BLOCKDYMEZ: If you only have 10 records in your collection what would they be?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: *laughs* This is sooooooooo hard to choose from. Let's see...Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill", LL "Radio", Eric B. & Rakim "Paid In Full", Fat Pat "Ghetto Dreams", Nas "Illmatic", N.W.A. "Straight Out Of Compton", UGK "Ridin' Dirty", 2Pac "All Eyes On Me", Notorious B.I.G., "Ready To Die", and Little Brother "The Minstrel Show"

BLOCKDYMEZ: Do you have any new projects that you want to tell us about.

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE:: Yes a new mixtape called "Resurrection" It's been a long time coming since my last mixtape and people were wondering were I still DJing. I had went through some stuff in '09, but God has seen me through and I'm blessed.

BLOCKDYMEZ: There are not a lot of places that promote FEMALE DJ's. What's it like to be named Southern Entertainment's “Female DJ of the Year” ?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: It was AMAZING! When I won last year, I was shocked and excited. I always give props to Janiro and the S.E.A. Staff because they didn't have to come up with the "Southern Grammys" as I call it. We are SO overlooked in the south, it's like people don't want to recognize us or anything.

BLOCKDYMEZ: What was the hardest obstacle you had to overcome as a female DJ?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Being taken seriously as a FEMALE DJ for our skills and NOT our looks.

BLOCKDYMEZ: How are you received by your male counterparts?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: I always get the "You're a DJ?" quote. I think quite a few people think that I'm an artist, but I'm not. I don't sing nor rap. But when I tell the fellas that I'm a DJ, they think it's cool and unique that a female is on the wheels of steel.

BLOCKDYMEZ: What advice would you give to any up and coming female DJ's trying to get to that next level?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: Keep grinding, keep pushing, and don't let ANY MAN tell you that you can't do ANYTHING! We can do it too!

BLOCKDYMEZ: I also see that you are a model as well. How long have you been modeling?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: I've been modeling for awhile. I can since I was about 12.

BLOCKDYMEZ: Has being a model helped or hindered your DJ career, and where do you see yourself career wise in the next 5 years?

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: It has helped because it's being versatile. I highly believe that talent has no end. I can bring the sex appeal to the mixtapes, but the downfall is that people look at me as a sex symbol vs. my skills on the 1s and 2s. Yes it helps as being a DJ most part, but in the long run its more of how I go in showing people yes I model, but I am a TRUE DJ. Not just the beauty on the turntables. I see myself in the next 5yrs., starting an empire like Diddy. I would like to help others that's trying to get their names and faces out there, whether it's music, media, clothing, beverages, acting, modeling, dancing, etc. I want to reach out to others and show them that their dreams can come true.

BLOCKDYMEZ: We are at the end of this interview…..thanks for taking the time to let BLOCKDYMEZ and BLOCKWORKZ get to know you….any last words????

DJ SOUTHERN BELLE: You are so welcome. I want to tell everybody to follow your dreams. Keep pushing, keep grinding. When one door closes, another opens! God Bless!
